Barriers and opportunities for adoption and scaling food system innovations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the cocoa value chain in Ivory Coast

The cocoa value chain in Ivory Coast, which holds the preeminent position as the world’s largest producer, is currently undergoing profound structural transformation. While it bears a significant contribution to the national economy, there are reservations against environmental and socio-economic sustainability. This study
examined the cocoa value chain in Ivory Coast to identify practical pathways for scaling food system innovations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while enhancing economic and environmental sustainability. The analysis is based on an extensive review of peer-reviewed literature, institutional reports and policy
frameworks, complemented by a stakeholder validation workshop held in Abidjan in December 2025.
