Agro-ecotourism in Northern Vietnam: Linking agriculture, culture, and biodiversity for sustainable rural development
Sa Pa town (Lao Cai province) and Mai Son district (Son La province) illustrate the potential of agro-ecotourism in Northern Vietnam, where agriculture, biodiversity, and cultural heritage intersect with tourism. In Sa Pa, well established agro-ecotourism leverages iconic terraced rice fields, ethnic diversity, and culinary traditions, offering homestays, farm tours, seasonal harvesting, traditional craft workshops, and cooking experiences that immerse visitors in local farming and culture. Mai Son, at an earlier stage, features diverse agroecological systems including fruit orchards, vegetables, livestock, and aquaculture, providing rich opportunities for experiential agro-ecotourism and community-led initiatives. Both sites strengthen local agri-food value chains by connecting farmers, cooperatives, and tourism operators while promoting indigenous crops, traditional recipes, and ethnic practices. Challenges include limited local supply chains, land-use restrictions, financial constraints, and environmental pressures. Nonetheless, integrated agro-ecotourism models combining farming, education, cultural experiences, and gastronomy offer pathways for rural livelihood diversification, biodiversity conservation, and the development of resilient, authentic, and inclusive tourism destinations.
