PUBLIC POLICY ON FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY AND SOVEREIGNTY IN CALI: A model effort
Cali is the third most populous city in Colombia and home to CIAT. Since 2015, CIAT joins the work of the Cali Municipal Mayor's Office, specifically with the Secretariat of Public Health in the redesign of a public policy for food and nutritional security and sovereignty as part of the project "Cali come mejor" that allowed generating knowledge and collecting information on the food system of the city.
Aligned with regional and national policies and international frameworks such as the Milan Pact (a voluntary action framework whose purpose is to provide strategic options to those cities seeking to achieve more sustainable food systems), a proposal for a public policy on Food and Nutritional Security and Sovereignty was generated and presented to the Municipal Council in August 2019. Currently this proposal was approved as Municipal Policy and establishes the legal framework, action and articulation to contribute to the guarantee of the conditions of availability, access, consumption, quality and biological use of food in the population of Cali, especially in communities with violation of the right to food, over the next 10 years.
CIAT hopes to accompany the Municipality in its implementation, as well as in the inclusion in the Development Plan of the new administration, of food security and the construction of a sustainable food system as a cross-cutting axis and an engine of economic and social development for Cali.
