Stefan Burkart

Dr. Stefan Burkart is a Senior Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s Tropical Forages Program, based in Cali, Colombia. He leads the global economic and social sciences working group for forages and livestock. His research focuses on technology adoption processes along livestock value chains, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and climate change mitigation and adaptation. This includes value chain assessment and development, business model development, economic analyses, adoption studies, research on knowledge and innovation systems, consumer studies, and livestock sector analysis, applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches and considering transversal issues such as inclusiveness.
Since 2015, he has been CIAT’s representative on the Colombian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and Dairy.
Between 2016 and 2021, he had a leading role in the global CGIAR Research Program on Livestock, and since 2022, he has been involved in several of the new CGIAR research initiatives.
He holds a BSc in Agricultural Economics, a MSc in Agribusiness, and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (major: Economics and Social Sciences) from the University of Hohenheim, Germany and has over 15 years of experience in research across the global tropics (Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern and Southern Africa, and Southeast Asia) and Europe.
