Democratic Republic of the Congo

Democratic Republic of the Congo - Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Our mission in Democratic Republic of the Congo

Agriculture plays a crucial role in the DRC's economy, employing a substantial portion of the population and contributing significantly to its GDP.

CIAT - now part of the Alliance - holds a Host Country Agreement signed with the DRC Government since 2008. We are currently hosted by IITA in terms of rent (Hosting agreement for Kinshasa Office only) and not as an institution. Today, the Alliance's work in DRC focuses principally on common bean breeding, seed systems, sustainable value chains, digital phenotyping, and gender, and inclusion

The DRC's vast biodiversity and agricultural potential offer a unique opportunity for the Alliance to conduct valuable research and develop innovative solutions that improve food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and enhance the resilience of communities.

The country's diverse agroecological zones and rich genetic resources provide an ideal setting for the Alliance to explore and conserve crop diversity. Research conducted in the DRC contributes to the development of climate-smart and nutritionally rich crops that are adapted to local conditions. Furthermore, the Alliance works with local farmers and communities to implement sustainable agricultural practices that improve productivity while safeguarding biodiversity.

Challenges

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Alliance is addressing key challenges of low agricultural productivity, food insecurity, weak seed systems, and underdeveloped value chains, while also tackling gender inequalities that limit women’s participation and benefits in agriculture. The Alliance work in DRC focuses on strengthening crop breeding and seed systems, promoting climate-smart and sustainable practices, building institutional capacity, and empowering women farmers to access resilient and nutritious crops and inclusive agricultural opportunities.

Thematic research areas

Common bean breeding

Developing resilient, high-yielding, and nutritious bean varieties adapted to local agroecological conditions.

Seed systems

Strengthening the production, quality, and distribution of seeds to ensure farmers’ reliable access to improved varieties.

Sustainable value chains

Strengthening market access, promoting value addition, and increasing income opportunities for beans value chain actors while fostering equitable and inclusive participation, particularly among women, youth, and other marginalized groups.

Digital phenotyping, and disease control

Using digital tools to speed up crop research, improve data accuracy, support evidence-based breeding decisions, and improve disease identification and control

Gender and inclusion

Contributing to the attainment of gender equality and inclusion along the beans value chain.

Impact

Strengthened agricultural institutions and local capacity to support more effective research, seed production, and service delivery for farmers.

Increase productivity - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Improved the performance of agricultural value chains, enabling smallholders to increase productivity, access markets, and raise incomes.

Sustainable farming practices - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Promoted sustainable and agroecological farming practices that enhance resilience, soil health, and long-term food security.

Advanced crop - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Advanced crop improvement and seed systems, particularly for common beans, ensuring farmers have access to high-quality, climate-resilient varieties.

Gender - Democratic Republic of the Congo - Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Enhanced gender equity and inclusion by empowering women farmers with skills, resources, and opportunities to participate meaningfully in agri-food systems.

Collaboration and partners

Over the years, the Alliance has established partnerships with government institutions, research organizations, non-governmental organizations, and local communities to collaboratively address food security and agricultural challenges in the country. These efforts are supported by funders such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministère de l'Agriculture, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Global Affairs Canada, European Commission (EC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).

Projects and Flagship Initiatives

The Alliance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo implements a range of projects and flagship initiatives aimed at strengthening food security, agricultural productivity, and inclusive development.
