Cassava breeding: opportunities and challenges
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/43245
Abstract
Although cassava is a major food crop, its scientific breeding began only recently compared with other crops. Significant progress has been achieved, particularly in Asia where cassava is used mainly for industrial processes and no major biotic constraints affect its productivity. Cassava breeding faces several limitations that need to be addressed. The heterozygous nature of the crop and parental lines used to generate new segregating…

Abstract
A total of 44 bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes was evaluated for disease reactions to bean golden mosaic virus (BGMV) by mechanical and whitefly inoculation under glasshouse and field conditions, respectively. Most of the genotypes reacted similarly under both screening conditions,…

International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Abstract
Plant disease resistance genes (R genes) show significant similarity amongst themselves in terms of both their DNA sequences and structural motifs present in their protein products. Oligonucleotide primers designed from NBS (Nucleotide Binding Site) domains encoded by several R-genes have been used to amplify NBS sequences…

Abstract
Brachiaria species are widely sown on the infertile and Al-toxic soils of neotropical savannas. Breeding programs seek to combine edaphic adaptation with other traits in interspecific hybrids. Edaphic adaptation is difficult to assess because it is only manifest in pasture persistence across several growing seasons. We…

Abstract
A complex of eight whitefly species associated with cassava exists in Colombia. The predominant species Aleurotrachelus socialis Bondar, which constitutes 92% of the total population and causes yield losses of up to 79% in field experiments. In order to offer cassava…
