International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/82112
Abstract

Sustainable and Equitable Increases in Fruit and Vegetable Productivity and Consumption are Needed to Achieve Global Nutrition Security
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98375
Abstract
Increased intake of fruits and vegetables (F&V) is recommended for most populations across the globe. However, the current state of global and regional food systems is such that F&V availability, the production required to sustain them, and consumer food choices are all…

Adaptation of beans to infertile soils
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/55956
Abstract
Beans do not appear inherently suited to infertile soils. A diagnostic effort to define and evaluate soil constraints in African bean production is needed. We suggest bean BNF is host- plant limited, and that BNF in short-season bean is due to inadequate C and N dynamics in the bean plant. In infertile soils, improved host-plant resistance to edaphic stresses may improve BNF.…

Abstract
The Bean Team Nursery (VEF) is the 1st uniform and multidisciplinary evaluation for adaptation and disease and insect resistance and is composed of advanced, coded CIAT hybrid lines from various breeding projects, the germplasm bank, and national programs. Among the bush bean entries, 16 percent showed resistant reactions to rust (Uromyces phaseoli) and 20 percent were…

Abstract
The principal objective of on-farm trials is to provide feedback to the technology generation/var. improvement process. The trials carried out by CIAT and the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario on farms in the Colombian regions of Huila, (10 farms in 1980 A), Antioquia (14 farms in 1979 A and 1980 B) and the marginal coffee regions of Restrepo and Darien in the Valle del Cauca (5…

Abstract
The status of CIAT bean technology development is analyzed and technology transfer activities in the crop in Latin America are indicated. Each phase in the development of technology that will allow major bean yield increases is discussed, namely the identification of production constraints, germplasm collection and evaluation, cv. improvement using wild or landrace cv., development of improved cultural practices…

Abstract
Multiple cropping, sequential cropping, intercropping, mixed intercropping, intercropping in rows, in strips, relayed intercropping, cropping patterns, monoculture, crop rotation and land equivalent ratio are defined. The characteristics of multiple cropping and intercropping with beans are discussed; for the latter problems of competence are discussed (…

Abstract
Emphasis has been placed on the screening of hybrid selections for resistance to rust, anthracnose, BCMV and Empoasca sp., yield and sensitivity to photoperiod. A total of 1464 materials (937 selections from the breeding program) were screened in the Bean Team Nursery and 700 (200 breeding selections) in the Preliminary Yield Trial. Results from the latter demonstrated major gains in yield…
