Reducing risks to food security from climate change
World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
Abstract
Climate change will have far-reaching impacts on crop, livestock and fisheries production, and will change the prevalence of crop pests. Many of these impacts are already measurable. Climate impact studies are dominated by those on crop yields despite the limitations of climate-crop modelling, with very little attention paid to more systems components of cropping, let alone other dimensions of food security. Given the serious threats to…

Applications of biotechnology to Brachiaria
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/82035
Abstract
Advanced biotechniques offer the potential for greater precision and efficiency in genetic manipulation of crop species. Applications of molecular markers in Brachiaria include assessment of genetic variation, gene tagging, and genetic mapping. In particular, recent applications of molecular-marking techniques to apomixis provided strong evidence of single-gene inheritance of…

Common beans, biodiversity, and multiple stresses: challenges of drought resistance in tropical soils
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/42315
Abstract
Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the grain legume with the highest volume of direct human consumption in the world, and is the most important legume throughout Eastern and Southern Africa, cultivated over an area of ~4 million ha. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) drought is the most important production risk,…

Addressing uncertainty in adaptation planning for agriculture
Abstract
We present a framework for prioritizing adaptation approaches at a range of timeframes. The framework is illustrated by four case studies from developing countries, each with associated characterisation of uncertainty. Two cases, on near-term adaptation planning in Sri Lanka and on stakeholder scenario exercises in East Africa, show how the relative utility of â??capacityâ?? versus â??impactâ?? approaches to adaptation planning differ with level of uncertainty and associated lead…
