Nutritional disorders
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Abstract
Different nutritional deficiencies or toxicities may limit bean development and yield. N and P deficiencies are the most frequent, although deficiency of minor elements and Al/Mn toxicity can reduce yields considerably. Nutritional problems are usually diagnosed by soil and plant tissue analyses and the observation of symptoms produced by nutritional disorders. Optimum pH for bean production…

Abstract
In 1980 major studies on entomology were directed to accumulating information on the complex of insects that attack the cassava crop, emphasizing biological control studies of important pests, especially Erinnyis ello and Phenacoccus sp. Basic studies on the stemborer (Chilomina clarkei) were conducted for the 1st time and a new pest, a subterranean Hemiptera (Cyrtomenus bergi) which causes considerable…

https://hdl.handle.net/10568/82137
Abstract
meanfly (Ophiomyia spp.) incidence was investigated at the farm field level to determine losses at successive plant ages over varying altitudes in the Kabale District of Uganda. A higher beanfly population was found at the 1,860-2,110 m altitude range than at both lower and higher ranges. Both beanfly species were found, but the dominant species was O. spencerella.…

Abstract
Since product development according to consumer-defined specifications constitutes a key to success for integrated cassava products, the process for generating and selecting concepts for new products and turning them into successful commodities are described. New products also cover traditional cassava products which are improved through better quality and/or more…

Abstract
In Panama most of the cassava is produced by small farmers on marginal, infertile soils with a low level of technology. One of the main cassava producing areas is Ocu, where Ultisols prevail. The most commonly grown var. is Brasilena, with av. yields of 10-12 t/ha. Production constraints include price fluctuation, quick saturation of traditional markets for fresh roots, and the resulting…

Genetics and plant breeding of Andropogon gayanus
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Abstract
Allogamous reproductive behavior and the demonstrated existence of ample genetic variation for a number of agronomic traits in Andropogon gayanus suggest a substantial potential for genetic manipulation of the species. Possible breeding objectives are considered and appropriate breeding methods discussed. Three ongoing A. gayanus breeding projects are briefly described…

Abstract
The yield of South African bean lines was assessed in Malawi, using 3 groups with 15 genotypes each. In the 1st trial, carried out in 4 different agroecological zones, Carioca 80 was the best genotype with high yields at all sites (712-1768 kg/ha) and resistant to angular leaf spot and rust. Other genotypes performed well at several sites: BAT 1514, PVBZ 1782, PVA 340, PVA 773…
