International Conference on the Conservation and Use of Socio-Economically Important Wild Plants in the Fertile Crescent

Ehsan Dulloo, leader of the Bioversity International Conservation and Availability Programme, is the keynote speaker at the International Conference on the Conservation and Use of Socio-Economically Important Wild Plants in the Fertile Crescent that will be held in Amman, Jordan, 8-9 April 2014.

Dulloo will provide some reflections on how we can achieve effective conservation of priority crops and their wild relatives, what actors need to be involved, and what data and information are needed. He will also focus on how such information can be made available to decision-makers for achieving conservation and development outcomes at the global and national levels. In his presentation, Dulloo will provide a brief overview of the status of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture at the global level, and discuss the role of botanical gardens and some key international initiatives for the conservation and use of plant genetic resources, and the implications of those initiatives for Jordan.

The Conference will be opened by HRH Princess Basma bint Ali who decided to create the Royal Botanic Garden of Jordan to preserve native plants and ecosystems, and promote biodiversity research and environmental learning.
