Malaysia's implementation of the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/105162
Abstract
This study examines a number of issues related to Malaysia’s implementation of the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing created by the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The paper suggests a three-stage approach to addressing these issues. First, it establishes a process for ascertaining which of Malaysia’s plant genetic resources for food and…

The evolving role of genebanks in the fast-developing field of molecular genetics
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/105196
Abstract
The role played by genebanks as repositories of plant genetic resources has evolved since their inception because of the need to adapt to the changing demands of their different clients. The past 20 years have witnessed a significant unravelling of important pieces of genetic knowledge. As a result, the organization of DNA is now well understood, information on how genes function has increased, and the…

Banana diversity in the Middle East (Jordan, Egypt, Oman)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/105291
Abstract
The International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) organized a survey of banana diversity in the Middle East in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It was the first effort at the international level to systematically explore banana cultivar diversity in the Middle East region. A consistent literature on the subject does not seem to exist. Indeed the few indications of diversity…

Banana cultivar names and synonyms in Southeast Asia
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/105378
Abstract
The Southeast Asia region harbours the greatest wealth of banana diversity, both in wild and cultivated forms. This includes some of the rarest varieties in the world. But how to classify them and even what to call them has always been a complicated issue. In many cases, the same varieties have been given different names in different areas and the likewise the same name has been given to different varieties. In September 1999 a landmark…

Climate risk management and rural poverty reduction
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/91015
Abstract
Climate variability is a major source of risk to smallholder farmers and pastoralists, particularly in dryland regions. A growing body of evidence links climate-related risk to the extent and the persistence of rural poverty in these environments. Stochastic shocks erode smallholder farmers' long-term livelihood potential through loss of productive assets. The resulting uncertainty impedes progress out of poverty by acting as a…
