Descriptors for Mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/90693
Abstract
The ‘Descriptors for Mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes)’ were developed by the Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros and a group of researchers from three research centres of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).
Mangaba is a native fruit species of Brazil, but also occurs in Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. The genus is monotypic, and there are six botanical varieties. H. speciosa var. speciosa is the most widely distributed…

The scientific information activity of Bioversity International: the descriptor lists
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/73451
Abstract
Effective sharing of information about genetic resources depends on everyone using the same “dictionary” – which is where the descriptor lists published by Bioversity International and its partners come in.
In a 2006 survey 90% or more of respondents stated that descriptor lists published by Bioversity and its partners had contributed to the development of genebank databases, increased uniformity of…

Sharing the non-monetary benefits of agricultural biodiversity
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/105415
Abstract
The Convention on Biological Diversity calls for benefits flowing from the use of biological diversity to be shared with the country of origin of the material. In the main, discussions around benefit sharing have focused on monetary benefits, with the sharing of such benefits often seen as a precondition to access. This approach, while welcome in its intent, has two inherent problems: it has led the significant non-monetary…

Characterisation of accessions held at the International Musa Genebank
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/104494
Abstract
The International Transit Centre (ITC) managed by the Bioversity International is the largest ex situ collection of Musa germplasm. The genebank is hosted by Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and maintains in vitro more than 1500 accessions, which include cultivated clones of banana, improved materials and wild Musa species. Efficient conservation of plant germplasm and use in breeding programs depends on proper…

Endophyte microbiome of banana roots reveals high diversity and potential for agricultural uses
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/104495
Abstract
Similar to humans, plants are populated with different sets of microorganisms with potential roles on host and ecosystem functions. Endophytic microorganisms colonize root tissues inter- and/or intracellularly producing a wide range of compounds useful for plants growth as well as for protection against biotic and abiotic stresses. Clonally propagated crops such as banana are frequently…

The effect of climate change on crop wild relatives
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/101251
Abstract
Crop wild relatives are an important source of genetic diversity for crop improvement. However, the survival of some of these wild plant species could be threatened because of climate change. We used current and projected future climate data for ∼2055, and a climate envelope species distribution model to predict the impact of climate change on the wild relatives of peanut (Arachis), potato (Solanum) and cowpea (Vigna). We considered three…

Participatory farm diversification and nutrition education increase dietary diversity in Western Kenya
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/101688
Abstract
Our study assessed the effectiveness of a community‐based participatory approach in increasing micronutrient adequacy of diets of women and young children through agricultural activities and nutrition education in Vihiga County, Western Kenya. Outcome indicators include the mean dietary diversity score (DDS), the percentage of women and children reaching minimum dietary diversity (MDD),…

Characterizing degradation of palm swamp peatlands from space and on the ground: An exploratory study in the Peruvian Amazon
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/80511
Abstract
Peru has the fourth largest area of peatlands in the Tropics. Its most representative land cover on peat is a Mauritia flexuosa dominated palm swamp (thereafter called dense PS), which has been under human pressure over decades due to the high demand for the M. flexuosa fruit often collected by cutting down the entire palm. Degradation of these carbon dense forests…

Fit for purpose? A review of guides for gender-equitable value chain development
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/97150
Abstract
This article presents a review of seven guides for gender-equitable value chain development (VCD). The guides advocate persuasively the integration of gender into VCD programming and raise important issues for designing more inclusive interventions. However, gaps persist in their coverage of gender-based constraints in collective enterprises, the influence of norms on gender relations, and processes to…

Papua New Guinea: a much neglected hotpsot of crop wild relative diversity
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/34633
Abstract
The crop wild relatives (CWR) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) constitute an enormous and unique resource of genetic diversity which may be vital for future crop improvement and food security, particularly because they may harbour many valuable traits for agricultural adaptation to changing climate. Yet we know so little about the CWR in a country so biodiverse as PNG. While PNG has attracted much interest from…

Participatory crop improvement and formal release of Jethobudho rice landrace in Nepal
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/104717
Abstract
Jethobudho is an aromatic rice landrace of the Pokhara valley in middle hills of Nepal. Although local consumers are willing to pay a high price for its purchase, the landrace has a problem with quality variation. Decentralized participatory population improvement for specific market-identified traits was conducted on ‘‘Jethobudho’’ populations collected from farmers’ fields in seven geographic regions…

Red list assessment of nine Aegilops species in Armenia
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/104713
Abstract
The aims of this study are to determine the geographical and ecological distribution of nine Aegilops species in Republic of Armenia and to make an assessment of their IUCN Red List status, using the IUCN Red list categories and criteria, in order to develop an in situ conservation strategy for wild relatives of wheat in Armenia. Ecogeographic surveys of nine Aegilops species were undertaken over 2 years in Armenia. They included a…
