Open access publication on family farming now online
Director General M. Ann Tutwiler and Bioversity International scientist Pablo Eyzaguirre are among the contributors to this 300-page, illustrated book on family farming. Now available free online.
To wrap up the International Year of Family Farming, a new publication from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is now available online. The publication, Deep Roots, includes 300 pages of images and articles contributed by agriculture and development experts, practitioners and scientists, giving us an idea of the importance of family farming around the world.
Bioversity International Director General Ann Tutwiler and scientist Pablo Eyzaguirre have contributed a chapter on how agricultural biodiversity is an essential asset for the success and resilience of family farming.
In their chapter, they highlight several principles that are crucial to empowering and supporting family farming:
- value diverse perspectives, knowledge, gender and the multiple strategies that can emerge in complex, productive landscapes
- adaptation and innovation can be endogenous, and is often faster and more sustainable
- family farmers have the potential to identify new and useful components of agricultural biodiversity and become entrepreneurs, given improved access to market

The printed version of Deep Roots will be launched at the International Year of Family Farming closing ceremony in the Philippines on November 27.
