Artemis Project

Imaging Technology for a Food Secure Future

The Artemis Project applies AI and imaging technology to crop breeding, in the form of a mobile application that can enable anyone, anywhere to collect accurate agricultural data.

Democratizing Crop Breeding

Phenotyping - the process of observing crops and selecting varieties based on promising characteristics - is an essential step of breeding. Modern imaging technology and AI has created exciting opportunities to accelerate phenotyping, and thus breeding, by collecting and analyzing plant data at a much higher quantity and quality than ever before. However, this technology is expensive and generally inaccessible to smallholder farmers and breeders in the Global South.

The Artemis Project aims to overcome this barrier with a mobile application designed for the everyday smartphones already used by farmers and extension agents around the world. The data collected by this application will be used to inform AI models for improved breeding, agronomic recommendations and varietal placement.

This work builds off previous collaborations with Mineral (an Alphabet company applying the latest breakthroughs in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and perception technology to make agriculture more sustainable) to deploy rovers that record and analyze field data at the Alliance's Americas Hub.
