Interactive Toolkit for Crop Wild Relative Conservation Planning
The Interactive Toolkit for Crop Wild Relative (CWR) Conservation Planning is designed to provide guidance to plan and implement active in situ and ex situ conservation of CWR at any geographic level. The conservation recommendations that result from this national CWR conservation planning process are used to develop National Strategic Action Plans (NSAP) (or National Strategies) for the conservation and sustainable use of CWR.
This web-based interactive planning tool that can help users, countries, organizations or projects to undertake systematic conservation planning for crop wild relatives. It is a set of guidelines that one follows to develop a strategy and action plan for in situ conservation of crop wild relatives. The toolkit covers a set of modules, practical examples, and resources of the main steps in the conservation planning process.
The Toolkit has been developed in the Crop Wild Relative project and resulted from many years of work in various countries across the world. Ultimately, it was refined with feedback from countries that participated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) project (Mauritius, South Africa and Zambia).

In what context is this tool useful?
It is useful to national authorities in charge of conservation or project coordinators or researchers to plan the in situ conservation of plant biodiversity. Three different groups of users may access and use this Toolkit:
- FAO national focal points.
- Agencies responsible for planning and implementing national strategies, such as national agricultural or environmental agencies.
- NGOs (e.g. farmers’ organizations), local institutions (e.g. genebanks, universities, research institutes), and individual scientists.
• Improved knowledge of crop wild relative diversity in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
• Increased awareness in scientific and political communities about the value and importance of in situ conservation of crop wild relative
• Enriched capacity of scientists and breeders to apply new innovative tools (conservation planning and diversity analysis) allowing for identification of both hotspot areas for in situ conservation of crop wild relatives and desired traits found in crop wild relative for breeding.
